"Perfect companions never have fewer than four legs..."

As a pet owner myself, I understand how essential furry friends are to you and your families. My dog Bowie and kitty Rosie truly bring a certain warmth and fullness to my household, while also adding to the chaos. air It may seem like having pets in photos is an unspoken no, when in actuality photographers like myself wouldn't mind at all! In fact, I find sessions with pets to turn out absolutely heart warming. However, there are some things that come with that to be addressed! I’m going to be answering some questions about what it takes to include all your four legged companions in photo sessions, and what you can expect!

Personally, I love when families ask to include their pets in their sessions. Whether that be dogs, cats, or I’ve even had horses, they always add a certain unique element to the session. That said, it can make thinks just a little more complicated and there’s some aspects to consider when wondering if you should include them.

First of all, think about your pet's temperament; Are they overly hyper? Are they nervous around new people? Do they listen to commands such as sit? If the answers to these raise some flags to you, it may be best not bring them along. A lot of sessions are limited time, and with that, you risk not being able to get the perfect photo. As much as I want to give my clients the best possible results and always strive to get at least something, bringing along another stressor can significantly lower the options and choices you will have in your gallery.

Second, remember it’s another element to manage, especially if you have human children. I would note, there’s only a certain number of hands you have to handle a pet and kids, so really weigh if it’s something you’re able to balance. Also, consider the fact that most of your pictures may include your pet if they’re brought along. While I’m trying to capture your family, it’s a little difficult to try and manage that and a pet that we want out of the picture.

Photos with pets turn out so cute, and bring a certain joy and fun to the pictures. Every year I try to do Christmas cards with my kids and pets. While it may be more difficult to get something absolutely 'perfect' (whatever that may be), pictures with pets hold such special meaning in them. Childhood pets for kids are treasured, and it will be wonderful to have their memories preserved in professional photos. No one can deny how important pets are to families, so give them that beautiful love and appreciation they deserve and you can treasure it long after the devastating day that they may be gone.
